Hello Filipa, Its fodder fava beans. They are used for feeding animals and are a lot smaller then the ones for consumption. You can buy them at the local cooperativa or other agricultural shops. They are relatively cheep.

I got a bit confused about the chop and drop with beans and I was sent to here.
It´s a bit odd to me to chop and drop beans before seeding cause I feel like is a waste of food. Well same with other vegetables.
I totally get the chop and drop, I´ve read the Fukuoka books and… I get the nitrogen-fixing plants, the biomass constructors, the mulch plants, the soil builders etc… but…
the planting and chop before harvest seems… a waste.
Can you help me understand that…

Hello Margy,
I am happy the chop and drop worked for you too. It does enrich our soil as well. We also use the chop and drop on our garden paths when we have to much chop. It draws in rain worms and they will spread the good earth under the paths into the beds. The other things we found that the chop and drop works very well in the tomato beds. When the tomatoes hang down they will settle on the mulch and not rott away so quick.

I lost my place for composting so was looking for a different way to dispose of my garden clippings and still get positive benefits. I used garden trimmings to mulch other plants, especially the ones I grow in containers. It helped maintain moisture and added nutrients to the soil. I’ve seen a large increase in worms in the soil, another positive benefit. This fall I have chopped my garden waste and have layered it with soil in my empty large plant containers. I’m hoping that by spring it will decompose enough to make extra rich soil. – Margy
