Taking the waste of the land and bringing in manure would take a lot of energy on an area like Terra do Milho. So we try to reduce the movement of these as much as possible. Ideally speaking the waste materials from our household and land should be processed on the spot. Likewise manure should be produced on the spot as well. That is exactly what we try to do. We recycle all our manure and organic household waste to reuse it on the farm.
Down to earth this means:
All our organic kitchen waste goes on our compost heap together with the organic waste material from cutting trees, weeding etc. The compost can be used in de vegetable garden.
We use a compost toilet which separates the poo from the pee. The poo goes on a special compost heap. Since we use sawdust in the compost toilet to cover the poo we hardly need to add anything to get the composting process going. The compost is used for manuring the fruit trees. Although some people say that, if the composting process is working correctly you can use this manure in de vegetable garden, we want to stay on the save side… The pee is diluted with water (in a specially designed barrel) and used in the flower garden. (is operational, still in a primitive way however)
The waste water from the kitchen, bathroom and washing machine will run trough a plant filter system and will be collected in a pond from which it can be reused in the garden.
This way the waste from our household will be reduced to non-degradable materials, which we have to take of our land into the container along the road.
